MP 56 from near Andover Junction

Mile Post 56 at Whippany

After the Erie Lackawanna abandoned the northern end of the Sussex Branch in 1966, Earle Gill got permission to remove this mile post from the property. He likely chose this mile post for it's good condition and proximity to the road. (An easier choice might have been MP 55, but it's cap had been previously snapped off.)

I first learned of the existence of MP56 when someone on the Erie Lackawanna list inquired about DL&W mile post dimensions. A respondent said that he helped move it up to the NYSW Newfoundland station where it was installed along the tracks for the Morris County Central.

I contacted the owner of the station and discovered that he indeed still had the mile post on his property. It was lieing face down in the weeds, but was still intact. The owner of the station allowed Steve Hepler to remove the mile post to Whippany last fall (2002).

The mile post is the most complete mile post from the Sussex Branch and now resides in a place of honor at the Whippany Railway Museum.
