The Morris Canal

This map shows the Morris Canal at the very bottom, just touching Sussex County at Waterloo Village. The Morris Canal was built across New Jersey in 1824 from Phillipsburg to Jersey City to transport coal and other non perishables. Being the best transportation link at the time to his furnaces at Phillipsburg, the Morris canal is one reason Abram S. Hewitt decided to purchase and operate the Andover Mine.
